Frank Ostanik enters his third season leading the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball program in 2026-27, returning to the position in 2024-25 after previously serving as head coach from 2004-07. A longtime member of the Fairbanks community and former Nanook student-athlete, Ostanik brings extensive coaching experience and a deep connection to the university and the state of Alaska.
In his first two seasons back at the helm, Ostanik led Alaska to two Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship appearances, with five Nanooks earning GNAC All-Conference Team honors during that span. In 2025-26, Alaska advanced to the GNAC Championship semifinals after defeating third-seeded Northwest Nazarene 87-75.
Before returning to Alaska, Ostanik spent 16 years at Monroe Catholic in Fairbanks, serving as head boys and girls basketball coach, athletic director and, beginning in 2023, director of schools and president of the Monroe Foundation. Over 13 seasons as head basketball coach, he compiled a 369-85 record, leading the Rams to four Alaska 3A state championships and nine conference titles. His administrative responsibilities included overseeing school operations, budgets, fundraising, enrollment and employee management.
Ostanik previously led the Nanooks from 2004-07, compiling a 55-32 record. In 2004-05, he guided Alaska to a 21-9 overall record, a 13-5 GNAC mark and a share of the conference title. The Nanooks advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship game that season. In 2007, he was named GNAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year after leading Alaska to a 17-13 record.
Before his first tenure as head coach, Ostanik spent eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Nanooks, contributing to recruiting, travel, game preparation and video operations. During that stretch, Alaska earned two NCAA Division II tournament bids and five winning seasons. The Nanooks also captured the 2002 Top of the World Tournament, becoming the first NCAA Division II team to win an eight-team preseason Division I basketball tournament.
Ostanik played for Alaska from 1990-92, appearing in 41 career games and averaging 4.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 54.2% from the field. He earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993 and a master's degree in leadership and coaching from Concordia University Irvine in 2017.
