Alaska Nanooks All-Sports Awards Criteria
  • Linda Moffitt Leadership in Courage Award:
    • For a female student-athlete whose actions have demonstrated leadership in promoting equal opportunity for women. 
    • Nominated by women coaches, staff and athletes, selected by the UAF Director of Rights, Compliance and Accountability. 
    • Linda Moffitt was a student at UAF who wrote a letter in 1973 to the Office of Civil Rights in Washington, D.C. to report discrimination within the athletic department.   • Cary and Sarah Keller Community Service Award
    • For a student-athlete who embodies the Keller tradition of volunteer service. This award recognizes an individual who achieves an exemplary number of service hours as a UAF student-athlete and demonstrates valuable contributions to the UAF and Fairbanks community.
    • Nominated by coaches and staff.
    • Since he arrived in Alaska in 1984, Dr. Keller, an orthopedic surgeon, was steadfast in his dedication to his patients, but also volunteered his service as Team Physician to the Fairbanks North Star Borough high schools for 32 years, establishing the first district-wide Sports Medicine Program in Alaska. He volunteered his service as the Official Team Physician for the UAF Athletics Department for an equally impressive 32 years, expanding the size and scope of the UAF Sports Medicine Program.
  • Bart LeBon Humanitarian Award:
    • For a student-athlete who embodies a positive athletic role model through selfless volunteer work in the community. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff. 
    • LeBon played on UAF's NAIA National Championship men's basketball team in 1973, graduated in 1974 and became a Nanook booster in 1975. Today, Bart continues to donate his time, energy and money in support of UAF, its student-athletes and numerous community organizations. 
  • Joe Tremarello Sportsmanship Award:
    • For a student-athlete who competes with respect and acts in a professional manner. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff.
    • Tremarello played basketball for the Nanooks from 1954-58 and coaches the women's team from 1990-94. 
  • Harris Shelton Spirit of Competition Award:
    • For a student-athlete whose never-say-quit attitude is the finest among Nanooks
    • Nominated by coaches and staff. 
    • Shelton was the UAF Vice Chancellor from 1971-92 for Student Affairs, Emeritus and a tremendous advocate for student-athletes. 
  • Most Outstanding Male & Female Athlete of the Year Award:
    • For student-athletes who have made the greatest impact on their program during their time at UAF. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff. 
  • Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award:
    • For one male and one female student-athlete with superior combined academic and athletic achievements. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff, selected by the Nanook Athletics Advisory Council. 
  • Owen Tinker Fan of the Year Award:
    • For a person who passionately supports UAF and its student-athletes in competition and in the community. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff. 
  • Staff Member of the Year Award:
    • For a staff person who has demonstrated excellent performance and commitment to the Athletic Department. 
    • Nominated by coaches and staff, selected by the UAF Director of Athletics. 
  • Coach of the Year Award:
    • For a coach who has had a successful season through demonstrated effectiveness.
    • Nominated by coaches and staff, selected by the UAF Director of Athletics. 
  • Athletic Director's Top Scholar Award:
    • For a male and female student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA, tiebreaker goes to whomever has the most credit hours
