Injury Management
- All athletic injuries must be reported to an Athletic Trainer (ATC) within 24 hours of injury, regardless of severity. If immediate evaluation is available, the ATC should provide that service to the student-athlete. If the injury happens outside of open training room hours and no athletic trainer is available for evaluation, at the discretion of the ATC, the student-athlete may be instructed to report to an Urgent Care or Emergency Room.

- If a major medical emergency (issues involving, head, neck, or spine; breathing emergencies; heart complications, etc.) happens outside of training room hours, the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) should be followed and 911 should be called BEFORE contacting an athletic trainer. An athletic trainer must be notified immediately of any student athletes being transported to the hospital.

- All physician care will be directed through ATC. If physician referral is required, the student-athlete will first be seen by the Team Physician. Follow up care to specialists or second opinions will be allowed, only after ATC is notified and involved in the process.

- It is the responsibility of the student athlete to have all outside records given to the athletic training department within 48 hours of being seen. If documentation is not given, the athlete will be held from their respective sport and weight room activities. This is for all hospital, urgent care, primary care, and surgical visits. If the specific nature of the visit does not want to be shared, that is allowed, however a note from the attending physician must give clear instructions on return to play. This information will be stored in SportsWare.

- Any special referrals will be coordinated through the ATC. Specialists that an ATC can gain access to, via a school resource, are for mental health care, massage therapist, chiropractor, or dentist. Please utilize the ATC when looking for these resources.

- Once a week, the Team Physician will be available for in clinic visits that do not require imaging or further testing. This appointment can be scheduled through an ATC but space and time may be limited.

- Referral for imaging will occur at the discretion of the ATC. In non-emergent situations, the ATC will refer through the team physician and will utilize the primary insurance of the student athlete, see Insurance Policy for when secondary insurance will come into play. For more emergency imaging referral, the ATC will use the resources at their disposal and put the care of the athlete as the main priority. For all imaging billing, the Insurance Policy will be followed with the student athletes primary insurance being billed first.

Insurance Policy
- All student-athletes are required to provide their own health insurance coverage, per UAF policy. International athletes have the ability to purchase health insurance through the school at an additional cost. Primary insurance information must be provided to the ATC and kept on file in both the Athletic Training Room and on travel with the team.

- It is advised that student athletes and their families review the in and out of network costs and provider locations of their insurance company. It is encouraged to have a policy that is effective for athletic injury and that will cover the student athlete in Fairbanks and while the team is traveling to other parts of the country.

- The athletic department will provide a Secondary Insurance policy at no additional cost to the student athlete. This policy only comes into effect for athletic injuries. That means the injury must occur in a team practice or competition that is Supervised, Scheduled, and Sanctioned as outlined by the NCAA. If an athlete gets injured on their own or during a voluntary workout, the secondary policy will not apply. Secondary Insurance does not cover general medical conditions as well.

- The Secondary Insurance can cover additional costs that are not covered by the student athlete's primary insurance. The ATC will help coordinate with insurance companies and providers as needed for billing and coverage questions. In order for coverage to occur, ALL BILLS MUST BE RECEIVED BY ATC WITHIN 30 DAYS OF BEING RECEIVED BY THE STUDENT ATHLETE. Any bills given to ATC after the 30 day window will become the responsibility of the student athlete and their family.

- If an injury is not reported to the ATC in the required window, or a student athlete schedules physician appointments without the ATC knowing, all financial responsibility will be on the student-athlete and the family.
