Biography

2011-12 as a senior: Named assistant captain...Played in all 36 games this season for the Nanooks...Posted two goals and 18 assists for 20 points...Of the 20 points, 16 points earned in conference play, scoring two goals and distributing 14 assists good for fifth in CCHA conference D-Man scoring...Named CCHA GladiatorR Defenseman of the week for the week ending Nov. 27...Led the team in blocked shots with 99...Had five multiple point games throughout the season...Concluded his collegiate career dressing down for 140 Nanook games, posting 12 goals and 60 assists for 72 points...Named the Shawn Chambers Top Defenseman for the Nanooks. 

2010-11 as a junior: Played in all 38 games for the Nanooks this season; 2nd on team for assists; first assist of the season was during the season-opening win against Air Force Oct. 8; first goal of the season was during the 4-1 win against Bowling Green Oct. 30; earned CCHA Defenseman of the Week honors the end of October; finished the season with 2 goals and 19 assists; recognized for Academic Honors by the Athletic Department.

2009-10 as a sophmore: Played in 33 games; earned first assist of the season against Mercyhurst on Oct. 10; scored first goal of the season against Ferris State on Oct. 30; earned three assists in the 4-4 tie against NMU on Nov. 28; earned an assist in the Governor Cup series win; tied 7th in the conference for Defensive Scoring Leaders; had 15 games with at least one point, five being multi-point games.

2008-09 as a freshman: Played 32 games; 2nd on team in plus/minus; 5th on the team in assists; had three points (2-1-3) against FSU on Feb. 14; assist against Michigan on Nov. 7; added an assist to the victory against UConn in the Kendall Classic; made a goal for the Blue's 4-3 victory in the breakaway skills competition during the Blue and Gold game.

Prior to Alaska: Four-year veteran in the North American Hockey League; skated with the Topeka Roadrunners in 2007-08 and led the NAHL Blueliners in scoring with 58 points (12 goals) and a plus-41 rating in 53 games; honored twice as the South Division Player of the Week; named to the NAHL's All-South Division Team and was one of four finalists for the Dave Tyler USA Junior Player of the Year award; prior to joining Topeka, played three seasons with the Santa Fe Roadrunners; after scoring three points in six games as a rookie (2003-04); 2004-05 notched 10 points in 52 games and improved to 20 points in 60 contests in his final year with Santa Fe (2006-07).

Personal: Son of David and Mary Lee Gens; has three brothers, Ed, Pete, and Matt and two sisters, Amy and Lisa; currently majoring in Business Administration.
