Nanooks Fall to Wolves in Season Finale

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-26, 0-18 GNAC) fell to the Western Oregon Wolves 73-58 in their final game of the season.

How it Happened
The Nanooks jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after receiving a pair of baskets from Emily Freeman. However, the Wolves responded with an 11-2 run to erase Alaska's advantage. Jazlynn Novelli and Pearle Green scored a pair of layups before Tamai Mancuso knocked one down from range, but the Nanooks ended the first trailing 22-16. Novelli got things going in the second, connecting on a jumper and three on back-to-back possessions, and Freeman added another make from beyond the arc to tie the game at 24. The Nanooks would take the lead thanks to another triple from Novelli. Mancuso would again connect on a three, and Green, Marney Rees and Novelli all added baskets over the final two minutes of the period, helping the Nanooks to 20 points in the quarter. They entered the locker room trailing by one at 37-36.

The 'Nooks could not get a foothold offensively for most of the third quarter, beginning the period by allowing a 15-0 run. They got their first points of the third at the 3:52 mark when Freeman knocked one down from beyond the arc. Novelli added a layup on the following possession, but that would be their final field goal of the quarter, and they entered the final 10 minutes down 57-42. The Nanooks matched the Wolves in the fourth, as both teams scored 16 points. Mancuso and Green notched threes during the quarter, and Mancuso led the Nanooks with seven points in the fourth.

Inside the Numbers

  • Tamai Mancuso led the Nanooks with 15 points. She added six rebounds and one assist.
  • Jazlynn Novelli had a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double, going 6-15 from the field and 2-5 from three.
  • Emily Freeman was the final Nanook to finish in double-figure scoring, posting 11 points.
  • Pearle Green posted nine points and had a team-high three steals.
  • The Nanooks shot 22-65 (33.8%) from the field and 9-34 (26.5%) from three while making five of six free throws.
