Women’s Hoops Hits the Road for Games at Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is back on the road for its final road trip of the season, facing Seattle Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 19, and Montana State Billings on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks dropped both their contests last week, falling to Simon Fraser 92-54 on Thursday and to Western Washington 60-28 on Saturday. Tamai Mancuso led the Nanooks in scoring in both games, putting up 27 points vs. Simon Fraser and seven vs. Western Washington.

The Nanooks opened their game vs. the Red Leafs by grabbing a 10-6 lead, with Mancuso knocking down a pair of threes and adding a put-back layup to help the 'Nooks build their advantage. However, Simon Fraser ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, and Alaska found itself down 15-10 after the opening 10 minutes. They were outscored 31-12 in the second quarter and could not get back into the contest.

The Nanooks scored just six points in the opening quarter vs. the Vikings, with Emily Freeman accounting for all the scoring with a pair of threes, and they trailed 16-6 at the end of the first. The offensive struggles continued into the second, with the Nanooks posting just five points, and they entered the locker room down 31-11. The Nanooks posted 17 more points in the final two quarters and fell by 32.

  • The Falcons have dropped five straight entering the week, including falling to Northwest Nazarene 93-57 last Thursday and to No. 15 Central Washington 69-53 on Saturday.
  • They are led by junior guard Layne Kearns, who is averaging a team-high 12.9 points per game this season. Junior forward Grace Leasure is the GNAC's top shot blocker, averaging 2.2 rejections per game to put her 14th in Division II.
  • As a team, the Falcons are one of the top shot-blocking teams in the nation, ranking 14th in DII with 4.7 blocks per game.


Montana State Billings Yellowjackets (14-13, 6-8 GNAC)

  • The Yellowjackets dropped both their games last week, falling to No. 15 Central Washington 73-65 in overtime on Thursday and to Northwest Nazarene 71-44 on Saturday.
  • They are led by freshman forward Cassie Chesnut, who is scoring a team-high 12.4 points per game. She ranks fifth in the GNAC in rebounds per game at 8.5 and is blocking the fourth-most shots per game in the conference with 1.3.
  • The Yellowjackets are grabbing a GNAC-best 14.2 offensive rebounds per game, which ranks 44th in DII.
