ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Nanooks men's basketball could not keep up with the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday evening, falling by a final score of 70-54 and dropping to 11-12, 6-8 GNAC.
How it Happened
The Nanooks jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage thanks to a pair of Davis Crilly layups and two Mike Miller free throws. However, the Seawolves scored their next nine points without a Nanook response, taking an 11-6 lead after the opening 5:30 of the contest. Miller brought it back to a two-point game with a layup, and a Crilly three later in the half made it a one-point deficit at 20-19. However, the Nanooks could not get back in front, with UAA continuing to respond immediately after the Nanooks made it a one-score game. The Seawolves led by as many as nine in the first half, with a Hasaan Herrington three putting the hosts ahead 28-19 with 2:24 to go before the break, but the 'Nooks ended the half on an 7-0 run, as Tariq Weiser and Jalai O'Keith both connected from long range to bring it back to a two-point game at 28-26.
Crilly tied the game right out of the break, knocking down a jumper to bring the Nanooks level. The Seawolves would counter with a pair of Herrington threes to reestablish their two-score lead, and despite Weiser scoring Alaska's next seven points, they could not pull to within three. The 'Nooks kept it close, as a Crilly three and Miller layup kept it a five-point game, but the Seawolves eventually extended their lead to 10 at the midway point of the second half. Crilly briefly brought it back down to single digits after hitting a layup with 3:53 remaining, but UAA responded with two free throws on the following possession to put themselves back up by 10. From there, the Nanooks could not bring the deficit down to single digits, eventually falling by 16.
