MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The Nanooks swimming team kicked off the PCSC Championships on Wednesday, ending the first day of the four-day meet in fifth place with 172 points. Kitti Marton, Mariia Sirotinskaia, Cosima Schmiedel and Ali Pecore entered the top-10 in program history for their respective events, while Dorka Dancsok secured a podium finish.
Marton and Sirotinskaia finished in the top-10 in the 1000-yard freestyle, with the two freshmen posting times of 10:29.48 and 10:39.18, respectively, to place sixth and ninth. Giorgia Merlo (11:01.96, 23rd), Macy Ahrens (11:03.36, 24th) and Guielsie Borbon (11:07.37, 28th) were the other three Nanooks to swim in the event.
Up next was the 200-yard IM, where Dancsok continued her strong season by securing her spot on the podium with a 2:04.24. That was good for a third-place finish. Schmiedel followed by posting a ninth-place finish in the B Final of the event, touching the wall in 2:07.09. Charisma Watkins was the final Nanook to swim in the 200 IM finals, finishing 18th with a 2:08.42 in the C Final.
Pecore added one more top-10 finish in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming to a 23.83 to take seventh place. Alaska notched a sixth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, with the team of McKenzie Fazio, Marton, Merlo and Pecore finishing the relay in 7:42.64.
The Nanooks are back at it for day two of the conference championships tomorrow. Prelims begin at 8:30 a.m. AKST, and finals start at 4 p.m. AKST.
