ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-19, 0-11 GNAC) dropped its contest at No. 9 Central Washington on Saturday evening, falling to the Wildcats 92-40.
How it Happened
The Nanooks let up 11 unanswered points to begin the game, with Emily Freeman giving them their first points of the evening on a three at the 5:43 mark of the first. The Wildcats responded with a 7-0 run, putting Alaska in an early 18-3 hole. Jazlynn Novelli added a three, but that was all the scoring the Nanooks managed in the first, and they ended the period down 24-6. Tamai Mancuso chipped in with another three to give the 'Nooks their first points of the second. She went on to score 11 of Alaska's 13 points of the quarter, knocking down two more three-pointers. Still, the Nanooks ended the half by allowing nine points without a response to enter the locker room down 53-19.
Genevieve Velasquez ended a 10-0 run for the Wildcats to start the third by knocking down a jumper, and Novelli followed with a layup. Novelli added a three later in the quarter, but the 'Nooks entered the final 10 minutes down 73-32. Mancuso started the scoring in the fourth with two makes from the free-throw line, and Sophia Lachenmayer followed with a make from beyond the arc. Freeman would score Alaska's final points of the game on a layup.
Inside the Numbers
- Tamai Mancuso led the Nanooks with 14 points, going 4-17 from the field and 3-11 from three. She added two steals and an assist.
- Jazlynn Novelli followed with 10 points on 3-12 shooting. She made two of her six attempts from beyond the arc.
- Amelia Brady led the team with five rebounds and picked up a block and a steal.
- Chozen Horn-Young and Desiree Redfox both had a team-high three assists.
- The Nanooks shot 14-55 (25.5%) from the field, 7-29 (24.1%) from three and 5-7 (71.4%) from the charity stripe.
- Alaska turned the ball over 15 times while forcing nine CWU turnovers. They scored six points off those turnovers, while the Wildcats posted 16 points off their takeaways.
What's Next
The Nanooks return home for a single matchup next week, welcoming in-state rivals Alaska Anchorage to Fairbanks for a game on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m.
