Nanooks Sweep Pioneers to Start the Season

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team moved to 2-0, 0-0 GNAC, to start the season on Saturday, picking up a 118-62 win over Pacific Union to finish the sweep of the Pioneers.

How it Happened
The Pioneers got on the board first with a Krystal Pineda layup, and she would add another after a Denae Skelton three and Siri Lindsey layup gave the Nanooks the lead. Lindsey added a three on the next possession, which kickstarted a 19-0 run for the Blue and Gold to give them a 20-point advantage at 24-4. Addie Prisciandaro led the Nanooks with eight points during the run, connecting on a pair of triples and adding a layup. Lindsey and Prisciandaro each knocked down a three to close the quarter, while Chloe Parker tallied two makes from beyond the arc, and the Nanooks held a 40-12 lead after one.

Lindsey scored Alaska's first eight points out of the gate in the second, draining two threes to add to the Nanooks' lead. Oakley Homer chipped in a three, and Desiree Redfox followed with a jumper to make it 53-14. Three Parker free throws made it a 40-point contest with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter. Alaska's lead would not dip under 30 points for the remainder of the second, and a pair of MaKayla Figuereo threes helped the 'Nooks head into the locker room up 74-29.

The Nanooks opened the third by outscoring the Pioneers 12-2 over the first five minutes of the quarter, with Skelton knocking down two from long range and Prisciandaro contributing a three as well. They added an 8-0 run later in the quarter, which took it to a 61-point lead with 2:38 left in the third, and a buzzer-beater from Parker helped the Nanooks crack triple digits for the second consecutive game, putting them up 101-38 entering the final 10 minutes. Pacific Union scored the first four points of the fourth, but Parker and Redfox would counter with a layup and a three, respectively. Lindsey added another three during the quarter, and the Nanooks cruised to a 56-point victory.
