Nanooks Volleyball Heads to Saint Martin's and Western Oregon

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team takes to the road for matchups with Saint Martin's and Western Oregon.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks fell to their in-state rivals on Oct. 1 in Fairbanks. The Seawolves swept Alaska, dropping the Nanooks to 11-6, 3-4 GNAC. The Nanooks were led by Cori Leavitt with 10 kills. Cynphany Henderson had a team-high 17 assists and added eight digs. Kellan Flynn led the Nanooks with 11 digs. Presley Engelauf and Leavitt had three blocks each. 

Saint Martin's Location Update
Due to ongoing floor renovations at Marcus Pavilion on the campus of Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Wash., Thursday's match at Saint Martin's was moved to Costantino Recreation Center on the campus of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash.

Three GNAC teams remain in the AVCA top 25 as of Oct. 5. Simon Fraser leads the GNAC at No. 18 with 416 points. Central Washington ranks No. 21 with 229 points, and Alaska checks in at No. 25 with 43 points. Two additional teams received votes this week, with Seattle Pacific receiving 12 votes and Alaska Anchorage receiving five.

  • Alaska leads seven major catagories at the conference level. They lead in digs per set (16.43), opposing hitting percentage (.152), team assists (723), team digs (1035), team kills (789), team service aces (117), and total attacks (2288).
  • Cori Leavitt leads the Nanooks attack with 176 kills. That ranks her fifth in the GNAC. Haylee Lyons follows with 161, good for seventh in the conference. 
  • Leavitt is swinging .306 this season, good for sixth in the GNAC. Her 2.84 kills per set ranks ninth in the GNAC and her 3.31 points per set is seventh. 
  • Peri Hoshock leads the Nanooks in total blocks and blocks per set. Her 59 total blocks ranks 67th in the NCAA DII and fourth in the GNAC. 
  • Her 0.98 blocks per set is seventh in the conference and 83rd in the NCAA DII.
  • Presley Engelauf follows with 57 blocks, good for sixth in the conference. Her 0.90 blocks per set ranks 13th. 
  • Tessa Onaga and Kellan Flynn are the one-two punch in the back row for Alaska. Onaga leads with 281 digs, good for the conference lead. Her 4.53 digs per set ranks second.
  • Flynn has 200 digs on the year, good for seventh in the conference. Her 3.17 digs per set is 10th in the GNAC.

Saint Martin's Saints (6-9, 2-5 GNAC)

The SMU Saints come into Thursday's match with a one-match winning streak. They split last weekend on the road, falling at No. 18 Simon Fraser in straight sets before knocking off the Western Washington Vikings in Bellingham, Wash. Emily Garten leads the Saints attack with 184 kills and 3.35 kills per set. Sophie Fast has been the main distributor for SMU, posting 403 assists in 14 matches and 50 sets. Tiffany Lam leads the back row for SMU with 205 digs and 3.73 digs per set. At the net, Hanna Ligons has 63 totabl blocks on 11 solo blocks and 52 block assists. 

Western Oregon Wolves (6-9, 2-5 GNAC)
Head Coach: Kaiao Nahale-a
Western Oregon enters this week with a four-match losing streak. They were swept last week at Western Washington and No. 18 Simon Fraser. They picked up a set at WWU before falling in four before being swept at Simon Fraser. Payton Davis leads the WOU attack with 134 assists and 3.83 kills per set. Samantha Darby has a team-high 349 assists, one of two with over 100 assists. Madi Noel leads the Wolves with 147 digs and 3.00 digs per set and Kate Klobas has 46.0 blocks on the year leading WOU.
