Women’s Hoops Heads Down to Anchorage for Game vs. Seawolves

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is back for a single game this weekend, taking on the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday evening.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks kicked off 2026 at home with games against No. 16 Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene last week, falling to the Wildcats 69-49 on Thursday and to the Nighthawks 84-43 on Saturday.

The 'Nooks kept things close in the first half of their game against CWU, holding a 19-18 lead after the opening quarter and trailing 33-32 at halftime. However, the Nanooks were outscored 19-8 in the third quarter and could not get themselves back into the game. Jazlynn Novelli finished with a team-high 19 points vs. the Wildcats, going 9-23 from the field. She grabbed three rebounds, dished three assists and collected a steal.

The Nanooks struggled to find their offensive footing early in their contest against the Nighthawks, going scoreless for nearly half of the first quarter and allowing 11 unanswered points to start the game. They fell behind 22-9 after the first quarter and would not get within single digits for the rest of the game. Genevieve Velasquez led the Nanooks with 15 points vs. NNU, going 6-8 from the field, while also tying for the team lead with seven rebounds.

  • Tamai Mancuso is the Nanooks' leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points per game to put her 13th in the GNAC. Her 1.9 three-pointers per game rank sixth in the conference.

  • The Seawolves opened the season with seven straight wins, but have gone 2-4 since the start of GNAC play in December. They split their two games last week, defeating Northwest Nazarene 76-71 on Jan. 1 before falling to No. 16 Central Washington 77-65 two days later.
  • They are led by sophomore guard Mahaila Harrison and senior guard Elaina Mack, who rank second and third in the GNAC in points per game with 18.8 and 18.4, respectively. Mack ranks second in the nation in three-pointers per game, knocking down an average of 3.1 shots from beyond the arc.
  • The Seawolves are one of the top rebounding teams in Division II, grabbing 44.9 boards per game to lead the GNAC and rank seventh in the country.

What's Next
The 'Nooks remain on the road next week for two games at Western Washington and Simon Fraser. They play the Vikings on Thursday, Jan. 15, and the Red Leafs on Saturday, Jan. 17.
