Nanooks Sweep Minot State to Finish Seawolf Invitational 3-0

Alaska wins the 2025 Seawolf Invitational with the perfect record, picking up the tournament win via sets tiebreaker.

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team swept Minot State on Saturday, Sept. 6 to improve to 6-1 this season. The 6-1 start to the 2025 season is the best seven-game start under head coach Brian Scott, who is in his 11th season as the Nanooks head coach. 

Alaska finished the 2025 Seawolf Invitational 3-0, sweeping Cal State San Marcos, beating Biola in five, and sweeping Minot State. 

How it Happened
The Nanooks cruised past the Beavers in all three sets. In the first, the Nanooks beat MSU 25-13 behind nine kills while forcing Minot State into a dozen and only six kills. The offense only improved for Alaska as the match drew on. In the second, the Nanooks won 25-15 behind 13 kills and only four errors. The second was the Beavers best offensive set as they posted 10 kills to six errors. 

The third was a similar story as Alaska grabbed a 25-17 win to finish off the sweep. They posted a baker's dozen kills and only five errors while the Beavs had eight kills and nine errors. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Nanooks defense posted strong numbers, keeping MSU to a swing percentage of -.028. Alaska also had 47 digs in the sweep. 
  • Tessa Onaga led the way with 16 digs in the win. 
  • Alaska had 11 more kills this morning than MSU (35-24). Elena Guc led the 'Nooks offense with 11 kills (.375%). She added four digs and an ace in the win.
  • Cynphany Henderson led the way with 18 assists. The setter added four digs and an ace of her own. 
  • Ainsley Smith joined with 11 assists, two digs, and an ace.
  • Haylee Lyons had six kills, 10 digs, and four blocks in the win. Peri Hoshock also added three blocks and three digs. 
All-Tournament Team
A pair of Nanooks were named to the All-Tournament Team after this weekend's invitational. Haylee Lyons and Tessa Onaga earned spots for Alaska after leading teh charge on offense and defense. In the three matches, Lyons posted 37 kills (3.36/set) with a .220 swing percentage, 22 digs (2.00/set), five blocks, three aces, and three assists. Onaga led the Nanooks with 50 digs (4.55/set) and added 11 assists and eight aces. 

What's to Come
The Nanooks return home next week for the 2025 Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic. They welcome Alaska Anchorage, Cal State San Bernardino, Rockhurst, and Rollins. The Nanooks play Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the 7 p.m. game time slot all three nights. They host their home-opener on Thursday, Sept. 11 against Rollins College.
