PORTLAND, Ore. - Elena Guc of the Nanooks volleyball team brought home the first weekly honor of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 2. She was named the GNAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Anchorage at the Hawaii/Alaska Challenge. This was her second-career player of the week honor and first this season. 

"Elena's growth and development continues to impress me," said head coach Brian Scott. "She consistently makes plays on the court that allow our team to succeed. In many cases, those plays come in the highest-pressure situations to give us critical points, momentum changes or defensive stops."

Guc helped power the Nanooks to a 3-1 start to the 2025 season, averaging 2.94 kills per set with a .248 attack percentage over opening weekend. She opened the year with 14 kills on a .323 hitting clip in Alaska's five-set win over No. 9 Chaminade, followed by 10 kills in a sweep of Hawaii Pacific and 15 more in a narrow five-set loss to Hawaii Hilo. Across four matches, Guc tallied 47 kills against just 14 errors, while also adding five service aces, 24 digs (1.5 per set), and 10 blocks (0.63 per set), including a double-double in the win over Hawaii Pacific. Now in her fourth season, the senior has totaled 524 career kills and 179 blocks across 76 matches since debuting in fall 2022.

UAA's Madison Galloway took home the GNAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. 

The Nanooks head back to Anchorage this week for the UAA Volleyball Invitational. They face Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, Sept. 4 (4 p.m.), Biola on Friday, Sept. 5 (12 p.m.), and Minot State on Saturday, Sept. 6 (9 a.m.). All the action can be caught on the GNAC Network. Alaska returns to Fairbanks next week for the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic and their 2025 home openers.
