Nanooks Cruise to Exhibition Shutout Win Over Briercrest

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team cruised to an 8-0 exhibition victory over Briercrest on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Nanooks wrapped up their preseason exhibition games at the Carlson with a commanding win. 

How it Happened
The Nanooks didn't allow Briercrest to establish any offense in 60 minutes on Saturday, as Alaska picked up their second consecutive shutout exhibition win. Fyodor Nikolayenya opened the scoring for Alaska, picking up the first goal of the night 8:38 into the first on the power play. This was the first power-play goal of the evening. Misha Danylov made it a 2-0 game 11:27 into the first, before Michael Citara made it 3-0 in the first, the second power-play goal of the night. 

3:45 into the second period, Trent Penner made it 4-0 Alaska. Nikolayenya tallied his second of the game 19:24 into the second, making it 5-0 Alaska before the Nanooks put up three more in the third period. 

Davis Borozinskis found the back of the net to open the third period, scoring 2:55 into the final stanza. Jhett Larson added his own goal only moments later, making it 6-0 Nanooks after a rebound out front of the Briercrest crease. The final goal came 14:52 into the third as Nikolayenya posted a hat trick on the power play, making it an 8-0 final for the Nanooks. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Nanooks posted 23 points on the night; eight goals and 15 assists.
  • Alaska went 3-3 on the power play tonight in their exhibition game. They also went 2-2 on the penalty kill. 
  • Calvin Vachon made all 12 saves tonight, keeping Briercrest off the board. Alaska took 47 SOG. 
  • Fyodor Nikolayenya picked up four points tonight. Three goals and an assist. 
  • Jhett Larson had three points, scoring one goal and adding two assists. 
What's to Come
The Nanooks open up regular season play next weekend against Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 3-4. Both nights are scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
