'Nooks Break Out Brooms Against Chaminade

Alaska ends the Hawaii/Alaska Challenge 3-1, defeating No. 9 Chaminade twice and Hawaii Pacific.

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team swept No. 9 Chaminade on Saturday, Aug. 30 to end the 2025 Hawaii/Alaska Challenge, presented by Alaska Airlines. The 'Nooks improved to 3-1 with the victory.

How it Happened
Alaska swept Chaminade, taking the first set 25-19, the second set 28-26, and the third 25-14. In the first, the Nanooks surrendered only one error while posting 13 kills and swinging .316. Chaminade had 15 kills but eight errors. Elena Guc supplied the early attack for the 'Nooks with five first-set kills. Kelli Wright added three, and the Nanooks had 2.5 team blocks in the first. 

In the second, the two sides went point-for-point. After CUH jumped out to a 4-1 lead, the Nanooks battled back. For the remainder of the set, neither side had a lead bigger than two and following a 26-26 tie, the Nnaooks picked up kills from Haylee Lyons and Wright to win the set and take a 2-0 advantage. Lyons posted six kills in the second while Wright posted four. Presley Engelauf complimented them well with three kills as well. 

The third set was all Nanooks. Lyons maintained the attack, posting five kills in the third. After jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead, the Nanooks soon stretched it to double-digits, holding on to a 21-8 lead at one point. They'd go on to take the third 25-14. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Haylee Lyons led the way with a dozen kills and a .323 hit percentage. She added nine digs, two assists and blocks.
  • Kelli Wright had nine kills on the day, adding a block. Peri Hoshock led the way with three block assists and a solo. 
  • The Nanooks finished the win with 5.5 team blocks. 
  • Elena Guc added eight kills.
  • The second set was a turning point for this morning's match. It featured 19 tie scores and nine lead changes. Between sets one and three, there were seven tie scores and two lead changes.
  • Cynphany Henderson and Tessa Onaga led the way in the digs category today. Henderson had a game-high 12 while Onaga followed with 10. 
  • Henderson added 20 assists for a double-double. Ainsley Smith added 11 assists in the victory. 
What's to Come
Alaska will head back to Anchorage next week for the UAA Invitational. They will face Cal State San Marcos (Thursday, 4 p.m.), Biola (Friday, 12 p.m.), and Minot State (Saturday, 9 a.m.).
