BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday evening by a final score of 68-50. The loss drops them to 6-16, 1-13 GNAC on the season.
How it Happened
The Nanooks were tied or held the lead for most of the opening period. Jayda Van Dyke and Emily Freeman notched three-pointers in the opening five minutes of the first, helping Alaska establish an 8-5 advantage. Western Washington cut the deficit to one, but a Taylor Pilot jumper put the 'Nooks ahead 11-7 with 1:43 left. However, six straight Vikings points saw them take the lead, with their final basket coming on a buzzer-beater to put them up 13-11.
Freeman gave the Nanooks the lead early in the second, knocking down a three, but the Vikings responded with their own triple, putting them back in front 16-14. Pilot tied the game at 16 with a layup, and Destiny Reimers added a pair of layups, but that would not be enough, as Alaska entered the halftime break trailing 32-23.
The Nanooks struggled to get much going offensively in the third, and despite Van Dyke knocking down another three, the 'Nooks were outscored 14-8 and entered the final 10 minutes down 46-31. Miranda Lomax was Alaska's primary source of offense in the final quarter, getting things started with a layup before connecting on a pair of threes. She would add two more field goals over the rest of the contest, converting a layup and a jumper, but the 'Nooks could not cut into Western Washington's lead and fell 68-50.
