FAIRBANKS - Broten Sabo of the Nanooks men's ice hockey team and Destiny Reimers of the Nanooks women's basketball team were chosen as January 2025 Warriors of the Month. Warrior of the Month, presented by the Alaska Army National Guard, is an award highlighting students who excel on and off the court, in the classroom and on base or in the field. Nicholas Dugger also received the honor. The Nanooks presented the awards at the Alaska ice hockey game last Saturday against Alaska Anchorage.
Broten Sabo, Sophomore, Men's Ice Hockey, Business Administration
Sabo is a true leader on the Alaska ice hockey team. He has a strong voice in the locker room, and his energy is contagious. He leads the team in minutes played and keeps himself in top shape, leading by example in the gym and on the ice. Sabo is a leader in team activities while on the road, helping maintain camaraderie among the players. He leads Alaska defensemen in goals, is third overall in goals scored and is second in points. Sabo makes an impact on the ice and in the community. He volunteers with youth hockey teams and has helped out at multiple camps during preseason.
Destiny Reimers, Senior, Women's Basketball, Rural Development
Reimers is a three-year captain and the on-court leader for the Nanooks women's basketball team. She is the first person to give encouragement and coaching and is the person her teammates look to when things aren't going well. Off the court, she is a leader in the locker room, weight room and classroom. Reimers is a graduate student in rural services and a TA. She has been asked to teach and run lectures for Introduction to Alaskan Native Cultures and grade papers. She volunteers with the Rural Services department on campus and at middle school basketball clinics while having her own business called DestBest Training. She is dependable, thoughtful, and courageous in taking on challenges. Reimers is the epitome of the women's basketball team standards: be on time, be prepared, be respectful.
Nicholas Dugger, College of Engineering and Mines
Nicholas works tirelessly as a full-time student pursuing an electrical engineering degree, all while raising a young family and continuing to serve the State of Alaska and the nation as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot in the Alaska Army National Guard. He recently organized to have eight faculty and staff from the College of Engineering and Mines Dean's office and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department participate in Bosslift, which included a tour of the hangar on Fort Wainwright and a 30-minute flight around the Fairbanks area. Nic's tireless pursuits and his unwavering respect for his superiors and colleagues is why Nicholas deserves to be recognized as the CEM Warrior of the Month.
