LACEY, Wash. – The Nanooks men's basketball team (4-4, 1-1 GNAC) fell to the Saint Martin's Saints (7-2, 2-0) 66-56 on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
After a Davis Crilly jumper opened the scoring and gave the Nanooks a 2-0 lead, the Saints scored the following 13 points without a Nanooks response to take an early double-digit lead. Joel Amaro ended the run with a layup, and Tyriq Luke added two more baskets in the paint to make it a two-possession game, but the 'Nooks could not pull to within a possession of tying. Despite Amaro connecting on a pair of threes, one of which to end the half, the Blue & Gold still trailed 32-23 entering the halftime break.
Tariq Weiser hit a three to give the Nanooks their first points of the second half, answering a Saint Martin's three on the opening possession, and Crilly followed with a put-back off his own shot to make it a seven-point contest. Crilly connected on a three of his own a minute and a half later, and his layup later in the half would kickstart a 7-0 run for the 'Nooks to bring them to within four at 42-38. Jalai O'Keith and Amaro contributed with a three and a layup during the run, respectively. However, the Saints responded with their own 7-0 run to bring their advantage to double-digits. An O'Keith three with 4:28 remaining made it a three-point game, but SMU countered with a pair of triples, and despite another three from Crilly, the 'Nooks could not make it a one-possession game and fell by 10.
