LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Nanooks swim team competed in the first day of the UNLV Invite on Monday. Alaska sits in seventh after day one, with five swimmers taking part in the meet.
Dorka Dancsok highlighted the day with a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard IM, securing a spot in the B-Final after posting a 2:05.72 in the prelims. In the finals, she finished just 0.02 seconds behind the top spot in the heat, swimming to a time of 2:04.20, which was good for 10th and an NCAA B Cut. McKenzie Fazio was the other Nanook to secure a spot in the finals, making the D-Final of the 50-yard freestyle after her 24.52 in the prelims. Fazio's time of 24.50 in her finals race gave her a 30th-place finish in the event.
The 'Nooks also had all five swimmers record time trials. Kitti Marton swam the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the event in 5:14.84. Cosima Schmiedel followed in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a 57.71 to improve on her seed time of 57.89. Dancsok also swam in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a 1:05.07, while Fazio finished the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.67. Finally, Giorgia Merlo finished her 100-yard freestyle in 55.08 to round out the swimmers competing for the 'Nooks in time trials.
The Nanooks are back in action tomorrow for day two of the invitational, with prelims beginning at 8:30 a.m. AKST and finals starting at 4 p.m. AKST. Fans can watch along on YouTube.
