Nanooks Fall to Vikings on Elementary Field Day

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks Volleyball team faced off against the Vikings of Western Washington on Thursday morning for Elementary Field Day at the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium. The two nationally-ranked teams, currently in a four-way tie in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference battled for victory and ultimately the Vikings walked away with the win.

Running the Replay
With stands packed full of students from various elementary schools around the Fairbanks North Star Borough, the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium was energetic as ever. Both teams, feeling the energy, came out swinging and looking for the early lead. After going toe-to-toe for the first ten points of the first set, the Vikings ultimately held their own and took the set 25-17.

Things seemed to be looking up for the team in blue and yellow after pair of kills from Elena Guc and Presley Engelauf, bringing the score to 6-5. Immediately after, Elizabeth Jackson brought all of Nanook Nation to their feet with not one, not two, but three consecutive aces. Yet, the Vikings were not easily subdued, fighting for momentum and regaining their lead late in the second. The set ended 25-20, Vikings.

Going into the third, the 'Nooks continued to battle for momentum, an effort led by Cynphany Henderson, who ended the night with 14 kills, 11 assists, eight digs, and a singular ace. The third and last set ultimately went in the way of the Vikings, ending with a score of 25-20.
