ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Nanooks men's basketball team (3-3, 0-0 GNAC) grabbed a 66-57 win over the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks (2-4, 0-0 CCAA) on Saturday to split their two contests at the Sprite Tundra Tip-Off in Anchorage.
How it Happened
The Nanooks got two baskets out of the gate to take an early 4-0 lead, with Mike Miller and Luke Fotheringham knocking down layups. Fotheringham added another basket in the paint just over a minute later, and a Tyriq Luke jumpshot kicked off a 9-2 run for the Nanooks to see them pull ahead 15-6. Miller had a layup and three during the run to lead the way for the Blue & Gold. Another Miller layup made it a double-digit game at 20-10, but the Lumberjacks responded with a 12-2 run to tie the game at 22. Luke put the Nanooks back in front on the following possession, knocking down a layup, and the junior guard added a three and a layup to end the half, helping the Nanooks take a 33-30 lead into the break.
Davis Crilly got things started with a three on the opening possession of the second half, and Miller followed with two straight layups to reestablish a 10-point lead. The Nanooks maintained a two-possession lead thanks to threes from Tariq Weiser and Crilly, with the Blue & Gold holding a 50-41 advantage just past the halfway point of the second. After two Lumberjack free throws made it a seven-point contest, a Jalai O'Keith free throw kick-started a 10-0 run for Alaska, which was capped off by a Joel Amaro steal and slam to force a Cal Poly Humboldt timeout with 6:15 remaining. The Nanooks would hold onto their double-digit lead until a Lumberjack three made it 64-57 with 19 seconds remaining. O'Keith iced the game with two free throws, giving the Nanooks the nine-point win.
