SALT LAKE CITY – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team dropped its opening matchup at the Westminster Classic on Friday, falling to the Westminster Griffins 99-74.
How it Happened
The 'Nooks fell behind 8-3 early on in the contest, but would tie the game at 10 after a 7-2 run spurred on by an Emily Freeman three-pointer. The Nanooks eventually took the lead 19-18 after a Freeman layup off her own steal. Westminster countered on the following possession with a three, and ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to put them up 25-21.
Two Ashlyn Waggoner free throws cut the deficit to two to start the second, but a 12-4 Westminster run saw the hosts build their lead to 37-27. Marney Rees converted a three-point play to bring the deficit to single digits before baskets from Desiree Redfox and Waggoner brought the Nanooks within five. The Griffins connected on two baskets to put them back up by 10, and despite made jumpshots by Amelia Brady and Freeman to go along with a three from Tamai Mancuso, the 'Nooks found themselves down 49-41 at the half.
The Nanooks got two threes from Mancuso and one apiece from Freeman and Alycia Shelley, but entered the final 10 minutes trailing 73-58. Mancuso and Waggoner started the scoring for the 'Nooks in the fourth, knocking down a two and a three, respectively. From there, Shelley provided the offense for the 'Nooks, scoring seven of their final 11 points, but the Nanooks could not get back into the contest and fell to the Griffins.
Inside the Numbers
- Tamai Mancuso posted a team-high 17 points for the Nanooks. She added an assist and a steal.
- Emily Freeman followed with 15 points while grabbing three rebounds, dishing three assists and collecting two steals.
- Ashlyn Waggoner put up 13 points and tied for the team lead with four rebounds.
- Alycia Shelley was the other Nanook to finish with double-digit points, posting 11 on the day. She finished with two assists and a steal.
- Waggoner, Amelia Brady and Desiree Redfox tied for the team lead with four rebounds.
- The Nanooks shot 25-64 from the field, 7-20 from three and 17-25 from the free throw line.
What's Next
The Nanooks stay in Salt Lake City for one more game against No. 21 Colorado Mesa tomorrow at 1 p.m. AKST. This game will conclude the Westminster Classic for the Nanooks.
