Nanooks Drop Thursday Game Against Nighthawks

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on Thursday afternoon 80-68. Alaska drops to 6-12, 1-9 GNAC with the loss.

How it Happened
The Nanooks began the game strong, opening up a 12-2 lead 2:23 into the game, with Jayda Van Dyke leading the way with five points. The Nighthawks scored the following six points of the contest to cut Alaska's lead to four, but Destiny Reimers helped the 'Nooks pull away, scoring seven of their final 11 points in the opening quarter to take a 23-13 lead.

NNU opened the second on an 11-1 run to tie the game at 24, but Miranda Lomax kicked off an 8-0 Nanooks run by converting a three-point play. Bobbi Clark kept Alaska's lead at eight with back-to-back layups later in the period, but the Nighthawks would score 13 of the final 15 points of the quarter to take a 41-38 lead into halftime.

Amelia Brady started things off by scoring Alaska's first four points of the third, helping the 'Nooks cut the deficit to one, but they could not retake the lead. Despite back-to-back triples from Lomax and Emily Freeman, they entered the final 10 minutes down 65-53.

Reimers cut the deficit to single digits after a pair of threes, making it a 71-63 ballgame with 4:46 to go. She added another make from deep in the quarter, but Alaska fell by 12.

Inside the Numbers

  • Destiny Reimers posted team highs in points and rebounds, finishing with 26 and 11, respectively, to give her the double-double. She went 11-21 from the floor and 3-6 from three while tying for the team lead in steals (3) and blocks (1).
  • Miranda Lomax was the other Nanook to finish in double-figure scoring, tallying 11 points on 4-8 shooting. She connected on two of her five three-point attempts and dished out four assists.
  • Jayda Van Dyke led the team with five assists while picking up seven points.
  • Amelia Brady posted nine points, four rebounds and a block.
  • Alaska shot 45% from the floor and 33.3% from three.
  • The 'Nooks were outrebounded 41 to 33.

The Nanooks are back on Saturday with a noon tipoff against the Central Washington Wildcats.
