Nanooks Skate to 2-2 Tie at Minnesota Duluth to Open the New Year

DULUTH, Minn. - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team picked up a 2-2 tie at Minnesota Duluth tonight. With the tie, the Nanooks move to 6-9-4 on the year.

How it Happened
Minnesota Duluth started the scoring with a first-period goal 9:14 in. Carter Loney beat Lassi Lehti to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage. After UMD took the one-goal lead into the second period, Brendan Ross found the equalizer for Alaska.

The rookie won the puck battle along the boards near center ice and entered the zone with the puck setting up his unassisted tally. Ross fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle, beating UMD netminder Klayton Knapp to make it 1-1 only 2:27 into the second. Unfortunately, UMD regained the lead 15:43 into the middle stanza as Aaron Pionk beat Lehti on a breakaway opportunity.

UMD came into the third period with the lead, but Haden Kruse needed only five minutes to find the final equalizer of the night. After the puck was played wide left of the UMD goal, it ping-ponged its way to Kruse on the right side where he settled the puck and found the back of the net, making it 2-2 5:00 into the third. That goal took us to overtime tied at 2-2. In the 3v3 period, the Nanooks managed five shots on goal while UMD posted two. Neither side found the back of the net, resulting in an official. UMD won the unofficial shootout.
