AMHERST, Mass. - The Nanooks hockey team fell to the UMass Minutemen on Friday, Jan. 24. With the loss, the Nanooks drop to 7-10-5 on the season.
How it Happened
Alaska struck first, needing only 2:15 to make it 1-0 in the first.
Broten Sabo struck first, finding the back of the net after his shot made it's way off the glove of UMass netminder Michael Hrabal.
Caelum Dick and
Brendan Ross grabbed the assists on the first goal. Nine and a half minutes later, the Minutemen tied things up on a Lucas Mercuri goal 11:49 into the first.
Nearly six minutes later, the Nanooks regained the lead, this time on a
Matt Hubbarde goal. The 'Nooks played tic-tac-toe through the slot as
Brendan Ross found
Kyle Gaffney slashing on the back door; the forward then played the puck back out front where Hubbarde found the back of the net. Through the opening 20 minutes, the Nanooks had a 2-1 lead. Their lead stood through a scoreless second period before three unanswered goals from UMass propelled them to a 4-2 victory. They initially tied the game up 5:25 into the third before taking the lead six minutes later. They then added an empty-netter with 45 seconds remaining in the game, resulting in the 4-2 loss.
