FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks ended their three-game homestand on Saturday afternoon, taking on Simon Fraser. After being tied at 36 with 2:07 to go in the second quarter, the Red Leafs notched a 5-0 run to end the half and followed that up by scoring 29 points in each of the final two quarters. Alaska fell by a final of 99-80, dropping to 5-10, 0-7 GNAC on the season.
How it Happened
Alaska got things going with a quick five points after Taylor Pilot took the opening tipoff down the court for a fastbreak layup, and Miranda Lomax followed with a three on the next possession. SFU countered with three straight threes, taking a 9-5 lead 2:44 into the period. Lomax ended the run with a put-back, and an Emily Freeman three put Alaska within one at 11-10. Pilot and Taylor Tiulana added a pair of threes for the 'Nooks, but they trailed 23-19 after the opening 10.
After Simon Fraser built its lead to 30-23 at the 6:23 mark of the second, Tristian Martin kicked off a 7-2 run for the 'Nooks with a layup. Martin notched a pair of buckets during the run, while Lomax closed it out with a three-ball to cut the deficit to two. A 6-0 run later in the quarter helped Alaska tie the game at 36, with Bobbi Clark, Jayda Van Dyke and Destiny Reimers all chipping in with layups. However, five unanswered Red Leafs points saw the visitors take a five-point advantage heading into the break.
Alaska would take the lead 4:21 into the third after a Van Dyke jumper put the 'Nooks in front 49-48. However, the lead would not last long, as SFU logged a 14-2 run to give itself a double-digit lead. Anna Nevison closed the quarter with a three, but Alaska found itself down 70-59 with 10 minutes to go.
Alaska cut the deficit to single digits after two straight Van Dyke baskets made it a 71-65 ballgame at the 8:23 mark, but Simon Fraser rebuilt its 10-point lead just over a minute later. Alaska would not cut the deficit to single digits for the remainder of the contest, falling by 19.
