IRVINE, Calif. - The Nanooks volleyball team moved to 2-2, 0-0 GNAC on the year with a 3-2 victory over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Thursday night at the CUI Tournament.
How It Happened
Alaska managed to fight back after dropping the first set 25-20 to the Toros. After the opener, the Nanooks posted a .457 hit percentage in the second and grabbed a 25-23 set two win behind 18 kills and only two errors. Their momentum would continue into the third with a 25-18 win. They added 15 more kills and kept the CSUDH offense at bay, holding them to eight kills and forcing them into six errors.
In the fourth set, Dominguez Hills forced a fifth set with a 25-17 win. Both sides only managed 10 kills but the Nanooks surrendered five more errors. In the fifth, the Nanooks grabbed the win 15-12 behind nine kills.
By the Numbers
- Karli Nielson led the way for the Nanooks with 19 kills on Thursday. She ended the match with a .283 hit percentage, only six errors and 46 attacks. She added seven digs, an assist and a block in the win.
- Rilee White followed with 17 kills of her own. She finished with a .156 hit percentage, 13 digs, two aces and assists.
- As a team, the Nanooks outhit the Toros .224 to .180 and posted 13 more kills as a team.
- Ainsley Smith continued her role as the distributor, posting 46 assists. She joined White with a double-double with 14 digs. She had seven kills, four blocks and three aces.
- Alaska outblocked CSUDH 12-7 and outscored CSUDH 82.0 to 67.5.
- This was the first game against CSUDH since Aug. 29, 2009, a 3-0 Nanooks win. Alaska is now 7-0 against the Toros dating back to 1983.
What's Next
Alaska is back in action tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. AKST. They face Colorado Christian at the CU Arena in Irvine, Calif.
