ANCHORAGE - The Nanooks hockey team fell to the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday, Feb. 3. The 4-2 loss drops the Nanooks to 12-10-2 on the year.
Alaska scored first 7:22 into the opening period as
Jonny Sorenson took a pass from
Arvils Bergmanis and beat the UAA netminder. Sorenson put it past UAA's Jared Whale from the left side and made it 1-0.
Payton Matsui tallied the secondary assist. The 1-0 lead stood through the first intermission.
The Nanooks went 0-1 on the power play in the opening period and outshot UAA 8-7 in the first.
In the second, UAA put their foot on the gas and picked up three unanswered goals to make it 3-1. 2:29 into the second, Aiden Westin scored the equalizer. 42 seconds later the Seawolves had the lead at 2-1; they capitalized on the power play. Ben Almquist scored the second goal. Just over eight minutes later, UAA picked up their third of the period. Connor Marritt made it 3-1 Seawolves heading to the third. The Nanooks went 0-2 on the power play in the second period while UAA went 1-2.
The Nanooks only managed five shots-on-goal while UAA posted nine.
The third period saw
Dawson Bruneski score 9:10 in. The goal pulled Alaska to within one at 3-2 but that was all they managed. UAA tacked on an empty-net goal 18:26 into the third, making it a 4-2 final score. The Nanooks finished the game 0-3 on the power play and 1-3 on the kill. The Seawolves outshot the Nanooks 26-24.
Alaska hits the road next week and will face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Feb. 9-10 in Tempe, Ariz.
