Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Nathan Kyle Pearsall

For the First Time Since 2003 the Men's Basketball Team Grabs Win at Anchorage

ANCHORAGE - Entering Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, the Nanooks had gone 7651 days (20 years, 11 months, 12 days) without winning a basketball game on the road at Alaska Anchorage. That number is now zero.

The Nanooks men's basketball team broke the streak with a 65-49 win over the UAA Seawolves. Alaska is now 5-13, 3-7 GNAC and UAA is now 15-6, 5-5 GNAC.

The first-half was a low scoring affair as the 'Nooks held on to a 21-17 lead. Neither side found their stride offensively as the Nanooks shot 27.59% from the floor and UAA shot 22.22%. Three minutes in the Nanooks had a quick 4-2 lead - then neither side scored for over five minutes. UAA snapped the cold streak with a three to take a 5-4 lead at the 11:34 mark of the first. Nick Hopkins responded with a three of his own making it 7-5 Nanooks. The two sides traded buckets and leads until Demarcus Hall-Scriven connected from deep to make it 12-8 'Nooks. They grew their lead to six at 14-8, using a pair of Trey Anderson free throws. The Seawolves chipped away, getting within one at 14-13 before Paul Johnson knocked down a three.

Another Hall-Scriven bucket grew the lead to 21-15 before UAA hit a jumper to make it a 21-17 halftime lead.

Out of the break, Hall-Scriven connected from deep again, growing the lead to seven for Alaska. The lead quickly hit a dozen on an Abdullahi Mohamed three. UAA pulled back within single-digits, but the Nanooks found an answer back until UAA went on an 8-0 run to pull within three. That was as close as they'd get in the second. Jaycson Bereal, Jr. killed the run and sparked a Nanooks run. Alaska quicly responded with 10-straight, making it a 44-31 lead.

Their lead would reach as many as 17 down the stretch before they grabbed the 16-point victory, the first victory in Anchorage over UAA since Feb. 22, 2003, a 73-70 final.

Abdullahi Mohamed and Demarcus Hall-Scriven led the way for Alaska as they both ended with a double-double. Mohamed posted a 19-point, 10-rebound effort while Hall-Scriven ended with a 14-point, 10-rebound night. Mohamed added two assists and blocks and added a steal. Hall-Scriven added two assists and one steal. Trey Anderson finished with 10 points, six assists, three blocks and a steal and Bereal, Jr. had a nine-point, nine-rebound night with four assists and three blocks.

The 'Nooks stay on the road next week at Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.
