Nanooks Set to Celebrate Six Seniors this Week

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks men's basketball team welcomes the Montana State Billings Yellow Jackets and Seattle Pacific Falcons to Fairbanks for their regular-season finales.

Last Time Out
Alaska split their last road-trip, grabbing a big overtime victory over Western Oregon on the road before falling to the nationally-ranked Saint Martin's Saints on Saturday, Feb. 24. In the overtime period WOU jumped out to a quick three-point lead before Alaska stormed back and finished on a 7-0 run after falling behind 84-82. Hall-Scriven hit a three to give the 'Nooks an 85-84 lead before following up with a layup and two free throws, giving him seven of the 12 points in OT and 17 on the night. 

His 17 was posted on 6-10 shooting with one three and a 4-4 night from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds and steals. Bereal and Mohamed both led the way with 20 points, Mohamed had six boards, four assists and three steals while Bereal had two assists and rebounds, a block and a steal. Nick Hopkins had a 13-point, nine rebound performance, adding two assists and a steal and TJ Doman finished the night a perfect 5-5 from the floor, scoring 10 points while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. At SMU, Bereal, Jr. led the Nanooks with 16 points on 5-11 shooting and a 5-5 performance from the free-throw line. He added nine rebounds and four assists while adding two blocked shots and a steal. Mohamed, Hopkins and Hall-Scriven joined Bereal, Jr. in double figures with 15, 13 and 10, respectively. Hopkins led the way with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

  • Abdullahi Mohamed leads the way for the Nanooks with 16.3 points per game. He has 359 points, leading the 'Nooks.
  • Jaycson Bereal, Jr. is the only other Nanooks player with over 200 points scored on the season. He is also the only other Nanooks player scoring an average of double-digit points, posting 10.8 per game. 
  • Bereal has been the most efficient scorer this season for Alaska. The senior is shooting a team-high 50.6% from the floor and 39.1% from three. Only Trey Anderson is shooting better from deep at 40.5%.
  • Nick Hopkins is leading the way on the glass with 6.3 rebounds per game. Mohamed follows with 6.0 boards per game. Mohamed's split is more even with 65 offensive rebounds and 67 defensive. Hopkins has 52 offensive and 94 defensive. 
  • Demarcus Hall-Scriven and Anderson lead the 'Nooks in steals this season. Hall-Scriven has a team-high 22 and Anderson follows with 20. They are two of seven athletes with 10+ steals this season.
  • Mohamed leads in assists with 58 and is tied with Bereal for the team-lead in blocks with 19 each. 
  • As a team, the 'Nooks are 54th in the nation with their 75.2% clip from the free-throw line. They are also 50th in blocks per game with 3.8.

Regional/National Rankings
Three GNAC teams made week one of the NCAA Regional rankings. Montana State Billings is ranked No. 2, Saint Martin's is No. 5 and Northwest Nazarene is at No. 10. In the NABC National Poll, Saint Martin's was the lone-GNAC school, ranking No. 21. In the D2CSC poll, SMU is No. 24 while MSUB received seven votes.

Pink Game
Thursday's game against MSUB will be the annual Pink Game, come out, wear pink and support the battle against breast cancer. 

Senior Day
The Nanooks will recognize six seniors on Saturday, March 2 against Seattle Pacific. Mawich Kachjaani, Bryan Nguyen, Nick Hopkins, Abdullahi Mohamed, Jaycson Bereal, Jr., Demarcus Hall-Scriven will all play in their final game as a Nanook and in the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium. Thank you to all six for their time in the blue and gold!

Abdullahi Mohamed is 18 points away from cracking the 1,000 mark for points in an Alaska Nanooks uniform. He recently surpassed the 1,000-mark for his career, including his one year at Eastern Washington.
