FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team ended a four-game slide with a 4-0 win over the LIU Sharks on Saturday, Feb. 17.
The win came behind a stellar performance from
Lassi Lehti. Coming into tonight, Lehti had made three-ever appearances with zero starts. Not only did he get the first start, but he grabbed his first-career win and shutout. In the end, Lehti finished with 23 saves in the win.
Cade Neilson got the scoring started 1:46 into the game, finding a rebound off of a
T.J. Lloyd shot to make it 1-0 Alaska. It took only five minutes for the Nanooks to get on the board again, this time
Chase Dubois.
Anton Rubtsov played the puck behind the LIU net and found a slashing Dubois near the crease. Dubois did not miss and slotted home the second goal for a 2-0 lead.
Braden Birnie earned the secondary assist.
The third goal of the night came 15:36 into the second and was the Nanooks' first power-play goal of the evening. Neilson tallied his second goal of the night taking the cross-ice pass from Rubtsov and netting the shot. Matsui earned the secondary as the lead grew to 3-0. The final goal came from
Chase Dafoe. Dafoe found the back of the net on a power play and made it 4-0 'Nooks, closing the door for LIU and giving Alaska and Lehti the shutout victory.
Alaska went 2-5 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
