HAYWARD, Cali. - The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to 5-5, 0-2 GNAC with a 62-49 loss at Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers pulled away in the second half after a three-point lead at halftime.
How it Happened
After jumping out to a first-quarter lead, the Nanooks trailed 29-26 going into the locker room at halftime. Out of the break, the Pioneers pulled away before grabbing the 13-point victory. In the first,
Emily Freeman got Alaska on the board with a three-pointer, making it 3-2 'Nooks.
Miranda Lomax followed that three up with her own, making it 7-4 Alaska at the midway point of the first. East Bay grabbed the lead back with a three of their own, but an
Anna Nevison three and
Taylor Pilot fastbreak bucket made it 12-9 with just over 2:30 left in the opening quarter. The Nanooks' lead would reach five on a
Bobbi Clark layup. East Bay made three straight free throws to make it 14-12 Nanooks after 10 minutes.
In the second, the Pioneers opened on an 8-0 run, taking the lead and making it 20-14. Another three stopped the drought, as
Taylor Tiulana made it 20-17. She'd later connect on another three, giving her eight points in the quarter and keeping Alaska in the game as her second three made it 27-24 East Bay. Following a Pioneers bucket,
Jayda Van Dyke beat the halftime buzzer on a rebound and put back, making it a 29-26 game at the break. Unfortunately, a cold second half from Alaska allowed for the Pioneers to pull away late. The Nanooks remained within five entering the fourth quarter after CSUEB outscored them 11-9 in the third, but in the fourth, East Bay shot 6-10 from the floor while the Nanooks went 5-18 and could not connect from deep. At the 7:04 mark of the fourth, Pilot picked up another steal and fastbreak bucket to pull the 'Nooks within one. Alaska would pull within one again at the 3:06 mark on a
Kayla Johnson layup, but the one-point deficit could not be broken by the 'Nooks. East Bay grew their lead in the final three minutes, eventually grabbing the 13-point win.
