Nanooks Drop Saturday Matchup at Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU - The Nanooks dropped their final game in Hawaii on Saturday afternoon, falling to Hawaii Pacific 75-65. Destiny Reimers and Miranda Lomax were the two Nanooks to post double-digit points, tallying 17 and 10, respectively.

The game began slowly for the Nanooks, who found themselves down 8-0 just under two minutes into the first. Emily Freeman would get Alaska on the board with a three-pointer, while Lomax added another make from beyond the arc, but the Nanooks still trailed 13-6 after HPU responded with its own three. Later in the quarter, Lomax knocked down a layup off a Taylor Pilot feed, and Taylor Tiulana followed by connecting from deep on the next possession to tie the game at 18. Lomax and Tiulana notched two more three-pointers to end the first, while Kayla Johnson chipped in with a made jumper to send both teams into the second quarter tied at 26.

The Sharks opened the second on a 12-2 run, giving themselves a 10-point advantage over the Nanooks with less than five minutes to go before the halftime break. McKayla Hart scored the following five points before Reimers cut the lead to 38-35 with a jump shot. Pilot added two more points with a layup, and Jayda Van Dyke sank two free throws for the last points of the half. However, the Nanooks were still down 45-39 after the opening 20 minutes.

Reimers got Alaska going right out of the gate with a layup and three-pointer on consecutive possessions, and would later convert a free throw to trim the deficit to two at 47-45. After two HPU free throws, Lomax and Johnson combined to help Alaska tie the game at 49; Lomax knocked down a layup while Johnson sank a pair of shots from the stripe. Anna Nevison gave the 'Nooks a one-point lead after connecting on a free throw, but Hawaii Pacific posted a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 55-50. Hart and Nevison responded with a pair of jumpers to bring the deficit down to one; however, HPU ended the half on a 6-1 run to build its advantage to 61-55.

Reimers led all Alaska scorers in the fourth with four points, but the Nanooks could not get within seven of the Sharks in the final period and would end up falling 75-65.

Alaska led HPU in points off turnovers (10-7) and bench points (33-29) but was outshot from beyond the arc 44.8% to 25.7%. After going 6-of-9 from deep in the first quarter, the Nanooks would make three of their final 26 three-point attempts.

The Nanooks are back in action after a two-week break when they kick off GNAC action on Thursday, Dec. 5 with a home matchup against the Western Oregon Wolves. Tip-off against WOU is set for 7:30 p.m.
