Pulles Takes Third in Freestyle Skate to Help Nanooks Finish Westminster Invitational in Fourth

MIDWAY, Utah - The Nanooks Nordic ski team wrapped up the Westminster Invitational in fourth-place with 260 points on Thursday, Jan. 4. They participated in the freestyle sprints and had one racer qualify through to the finals. 

Mariel Pulles made it to the finals on the women's side on day two of the Westminster Invitational. She led the way, taking third in the freestyle sprints. She started her day with a qualifying time of 3:55.09. In the quarterfinals, Pulles posted a 3:48.25 and in the semifinals she raced to a 3:51.41. She ended up taking third overall with a finals time of 4:07.36, earning 34 points for the Nanooks. Kendall Kramer followed her teammate in sixth-place with an appearance in the quarterfinals. She had a qualifying time of 3:59.89 before posting a 3:50.64 in the quarterfinals. 

No other Nanooks racer on the women's side made it past the qualifying round. Rosie Fordham was the third scorer for the Nanooks, earning 15 points with a 19th-place finish. She posted a time of 4:11.17. Aila Berrigan and Tabitha Williams followed in Fordham's footsteps, taking 25th and 26th with times of 4:16.01 and 4:16.89, respectively. Luise Graef took 31st with a time of 4:20.29, Elsie Weiss took 35th with a time of 4:34.08 and Abigail Haas rounded out the Nanooks racers with a 38th-place finish and finishing time of 4:41.20.

The women's team scored 76 points, good for third in the women's Nordic day two scoring. They finished the two-day Invitational with the third-most points by a women's team as well, posting a combined score of 137.

On the men's side, Christopher Kalev highlighted the day, finishing 12th-overall and making an appearance in the quarterfinals. He posted a qualifying time of 3:20.47 before finishing in 3:25.66 in the quarterfinals and earning his 12th-place finish. This earned the Nanooks 21 points. 

Mike Ophoff was the next Nanooks racer to finish, taking 15th and just missing out on a quarterfinals appearance. He posted a qualifying time of 3:24.64 and earned 19 points for Alaska. Josh Baurick was the third-finisher for the Nanooks, taking 31st with a time of 3:33.63. Ben Dohlby and Jace Peters rounded out the racers for the Alaska men's team, finishing in 35th and 36th with times of 3:41.58 and 3:44.67, respectively. 

The men's team earned 52 points on day two while the women's team posted 76, giving the Nanooks a fourth-place finish with 260 points. They trailed Colorado by five points as the Buffalo took third with 265 points. Denver was in second with 309 and Utah came in first with 353. The men's team took fourth in Nordic point totals.
