Men's Hoops Falls in Friday Matchup at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. - The Nanooks men's basketball team fell to the Simon Fraser Red Leafs on Friday, Jan. 19. SFU grabbed an 89-61 victory a day after their originally scheduled game was postponed due to inclement weather in the Pacific Northwest and Lower Mainland region of British Columbia.

The loss drops Alaska to 3-11, 1-5 GNAC on the season.

Trey Anderson got the Nanooks on the board in the first with a jumper at the 17:47 mark. SFU grew their lead out to five before a run by the Nanooks gave them the lead at 9-8 on a Bryan Nguyen layup. The Red Leafs answered with a 5-0 run before the 'Nooks matched it and an and-one from Nick Hopkins tied it at 14-14. Both sides traded runs down the stretch but it was Simon Fraser who ended the opening 20 minutes with the momentum, extending their lead to eight with 38 seconds left and taking a 42-34 advantage into the locker room.

A lot of the first-half offense for SFU came from three as they went 8-15 from deep and 14-27 from the floor while the Nanooks went 12-32 from the floor and only connected from deep twice.

Unfortunately for the Nanooks, the trend stayed the same in the second as SFU's offense seemed to not miss in the final 20 minutes. In the second, Alaska went 10-28 from the floor and 2-10 from three while the Red Leafs went 19-30 from the floor and 5-11 from deep. Alaska answered an early three with a three of their own to maintain the eight-point deficit but SFU quickly responded with a run to make it a 16-point Red Leafs lead. They'd lead by as many as 30 before taking the 28-point victory over the Nanooks.

Abdullahi Mohamed led the Nanooks in scoring with 13 points. He went 6-6 from the free-throw line and 1-2 from deep. Nick Hopkins had a strong night offensively and on the glass as he posted a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double. He had five offensive rebounds and seven defensive while adding four assists and two steals. Demarcus Hall-Scriven added 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks.

The Nanooks are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Western Washington.
