FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks swim team defeated the Westmont Warriors on Friday, Jan. 12 in a dual meet at the Patty Center Pool. The victory was the first of the season for the Nanooks.Â
Day one consisted of 11 events and the Nanooks grabbed a first-place finish in seven of them. The first of the day was the 400-yard medley relay. The Nanooks team of
Charlotte Fletcher-Stables,
Dorka Dancsok,
Adeline Berry and
Lainey Lioi took first and earned 11 points with a time of 4:02.85. Westmont took the next two placements and the Nanooks second team finished in fourth. The first independent race of the evening was the 1000-yard freestyle.
Payton Wojciechowicz led the way for Alaska, taking second-place with a time of 11:15.84. She was followed by
Shannon McCallum in third with a time of 11:46.34 and
Kylee Carter was the final Nanooks racer to finish, taking sixth with a time of 12:55.34.
Naomi Burgan led the way for Alaska in the third event, the 200-yard freestyle, taking second with a time of 2:04.57.
Tori Shoemaker followed in fourth-place with a 2:04.59. The two racers finished close to the winner and second-place finisher as Westmont took the top two positions with times of 2:02.33 and 2:02.34.
Lainey Lioi posted another close second-place finish for the Nanooks in the fourth event, the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in second with a time of 26.46, trailing the winner by .31 seconds.
Adeline Berry and
Kaidence Sampsel took fifth and sixth in the same event, posting times of 27.12 and 27.51 respectively.
Dorka Dancsok got the first individual win for the Nanooks in the 200-yard IM. She ended up winning by over 12 seconds as the freshman swam to a winning time of 2:08.56 for nine team points.
Naomi Burgan followed in second with a time of 2:20.68, earning four more points for the Nanooks. Westmont grabbed their final win of the night in the 100-yard butterfly as Ella Chaisson posted a winning time of 1:00.01.
Adeline Berry was the top-finishing Nanooks racer, taking third with a time of 1:01.99, trailing by only under two seconds.
Mesa Moran and Sampsel rounded out the Alaska finishers with fifth and sixth-place finishes on 1:06.80 and 1:15.13 times.
Charlotte Fletcher-Stables got the Nanooks back into their winning ways with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle. Her and
Lainey Lioi went one-two in the standings on times of 56.27 and 57.23 for nine and four team points. Fletcher-Stables grabbed another first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, winning by .33 seconds and posting a time of 59.22.
Shannon McCallum tied with Westmont's Hanna DeSoto for third with a time of 1:05.81.Â
The 500-yard freestyle went to the Nanooks, giving them three-straight wins in the pool. Shoemaker took first in the event, finishing in 5:24.60 and earning nine points.
Payton Wojciechowicz followed in third with a time of 5:31.52 and
Mesa Moran took sixth with a 5:45.73.Â
Dancsok grabbed the final individual win of the night in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning by over five seconds with a time of 1:07.31.
Meah McCallum and
Kylee Carter took fifth and sixth in the event wiht times of 1:22.23 and 1:25.97. The final event of the evening proved to be the win-clincher for the Nanooks as they took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay to earn 11 points. The team of
Lainey Lioi,
Charlotte Fletcher-Stables,
Naomi Burgan and
Dorka Dancsok took first with a time of 3:43.94, winning by four seconds. The final Nanooks relay team took fourth with a time of 3:55.67.Â
Ksenia Gromova was proud of her teams efforts in Friday's victory feeling they stepped up after a long trip to California earlier this week, "The team did really well working on their details like turns, underwaters and finishes. Relay exchanges looked really good too. I'm very proud of the team for stepping up like this considering the facts that the opposing team had four more scoring swimmers than us and that we arrived from our training trip late last night."Â
These two teams do battle once again tomorrow morning in the Patty Center Pool at 10:00 a.m.
