Nanooks Fall to Seawolves in Straight Sets to Open GNAC Play

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks fell to 2-7, 0-1 GNAC with a three-set loss to the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Alaska was held to a -.040 hit percentage on the night while UAA posted a .239 team total. The Nanooks also surrendered 27 errors on the attack to Anchorage's 14. The first was a quick; UAA took it 25-14. Ella Bines and Karli Nielson posted a pair of kills each but the offense posted a -.229 hit percentage in the opening set, making it 1-0 UAA. In the second, the Seawolves jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Nielson tallied another kill to stop the bleeding. The two sides traded points before Anchorage extended their lead to 12-6.

The 'Nooks made a small run, pulling within three at 12-9 but UAA answered back with four-straight to make it 16-9. Another late push from the Nanooks made it 21-18 UAA, capped by an Elizabeth Jackson kill on a free-ball, but out of a UAA timeout, the Seawolves made it 23-18 and eventually took the set 25-20.

In the third, the Nanooks pushed ahead to an early 6-4 lead behind two aces from Josie Jansen. UAA grabbed the lead but Elena Guc gave the 'Nooks a small lift off the bench, boasting one of her five kills to tie it at 7-7. The Seawolves went on a run, taking a four-point lead at 12-8 but Guc kept the Nanooks close, making it 14-13 and 15-14 some points later. After pulling within one, the Nanooks saw their final hopes dwindle as UAA put them away with six-straight, making it 22-15 and eventually capping off the third with a 25-17 win.

Bines and Nielson led the way with six kills. Guc followed with five. Cynphany Henderson led the distribution tonight with eight assists. Ainsley Smith added six and Kinley Erickson and Grace Steurer added three each. Stuerer finished with a game-high 12 digs.
