FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will welcome Trey Anderson from Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash. to Fairbanks for the 2023-24 season.
Anderson, a 6-4 guard from Highland, Utah, has spent the previous two seasons playing for Green River College in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). "We are very excited to have Trey join our Nanooks basketball family." Said head coach Greg Sparling, "Trey is a very skilled guard that does so much for a team that doesn't show up in the stat sheet. Trey is a natural leader on and off the floor and will have an immediate impact within our program. Coach Drake has helped develop Trey on and off the floor as a true leader and a great young man."Â
When asked about his decision on joining Alaska men's basketball, Anderson felt it was the best fit for his future both on and off the court, "I chose the University of Alaska Fairbanks because it seemed like the best place for me to continue my academic and athletic career. I really like the staff and think they will put me and our team in the best position to succeed!"
Anderson had a pair of successful years at Green River. In his first season with the Gators, he played in and started all 30 games. He posted 15.8 points per game while shooting 52.6% from the floor, 32.7% from deep and 76.6% from the free-throw line. His value expanded deeper than the offensive side of the ball as he grabbed 6.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game for the 21-22 year. In year two during the 2022-23 season, Anderson scored 12.3 points per game in 23 games played and 22 starts. He shot 45.8% from the floor and 77% from the free-throw line. He added 4.3 rebounds per game and 2.6 assists per game. Green River posted a 23-6, 12-2 NWAC record and took second in the West Division, qualifying for the playoffs. Their season would end in the NWAC Men's Basketball Sweet 16 with a 73-70 loss to SW Oregon.Â
"Trey Anderson is one of the best basketball players in the country as far as college basketball goes, but that's not the best part about what the Nanooks are receiving." Said Green River head coach Godfrey Drake, "The best part is Trey is more than an extension of a coach on the floor, he is the coach of the floor. He will take the vision of what coach Sparling wants on game day/practice/weights, etc. and actually become the living version of that. Hands down one of the best humans on the planet and it just so happens he can hoop with the best of them. The 'Nooks athletics department and campus just got a whole lot better with the addition of Trey Anderson!"
Additional men's basketball signees will be announced in the coming summer weeks and months.Â
