FAIRBANKS – Make it four-straight and 10 of the last 12 for the Nanooks hockey team. They grabbed a big 5-2 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Carlson Center. With the win, the 'Nooks improve to 15-9-2 on the season.
ASU got the scoring started early and while on the power play. 2:25 into the first, Teddy Lagerback made it 1-0 Sun Devils, beating Alaska netminder
Matt Radomsky. It did not take long for the 'Nooks to answer back, however, as
Brady Risk scored his first of the night.
Braden Birnie and
Karl Falk found Risk who put a quick snipe in the back of the net for the equalizer. That goal came only 2:50 after ASU's opener.
Chase Dubois followed close behind, only 2:14 later.
He was played the puck from
Jonny Sorenson and
Payton Matsui and beat TJ Semptimphelter, the ASU netminder, to give the Nanooks a 2-1 lead in the first. That lead stood through the rest of the first and was finally extended 18:29 into the second.
While short-handed, the Nanooks managed to get an unassisted goal from rookie
Braden Birnie. The rook went coast-to-coast for his first-career goal in the blue and gold and tallied his first-career game-winner alongside it.
Josh Doan pulled ASU back within one only 2:59 into the third after intercepting a puck near the blue-line but
Arvils Bergmanis and
Brady Risk put the game away with goals 12:41 and 17:25 into the third. Bergmanis' goal came after
Matt Koethe played the puck up the wall to Matsui. Matsui then found Bergmanis on the backside for the goal. Risk tallied the empty-netter to seal the deal –
Garrett Pyke was credited with the assist.
The 'Nooks now travel to LIU next weekend before bringing the Sharks home a week later.
