Women's Hoops Falls to Seattle Pacific to Wrap-Up Season

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell on the road to the Seattle Pacific University Falcons on Saturday, February 25th, to wrap up the season. The 'Nooks (4-21, 1-17 GNAC) cooled down after a fast starter in the first quarter setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Kayla Johnson got the scoring started for both teams off of a Paola Perez-Mendoza assist. An Ellen Silva hook shot and a Perez-Mendoza matched the Falcons scoring through the first five minutes of the first quarter. A Jayda Van Dyke made jump shot gave the 'Nooks a momentary lead, 8-6, before the Falcons rattled off nine straight points, to take a 15-8 lead late into the first quarter. Destiny Reimers splashed a jump shot and Perez-Mendoza added a free throw cutting the Falcon lead to four. However, SPU would answer with a jumper of their own to extend the lead to six at the end of the first quarter, 17-11.

SPU started off scoring in the second quarter with a 7-0 run. Sam Tolliver ended the Falcon run with a three, cutting the lead to 10. The Nanooks and Falcons would trade made jump shots over the next three minutes, keeping the deficit hovering at double digits. A Taylor Tiulana three, however, would cut the Falcon lead back to single digits, 30-21. SPU had a quick answer with four straight points. The 'Nooks would answer the SPU run with layups by Emma Wass and Van Dyke, cutting the lead to 34-25 at the half.

SPU opened the scoring in the third quarter, scoring three straight. A Silva stepback stomped out the SPU run, and Tolliver matched and surpassed it with two free throws. The Falcons scored six straight points to extend the lead to 14, 43-29. Tolliver once again ended the run with free throws, and the Falcons once again answered, rattling off four straight before Tolliver made two free throws again, making it, 47-33. Kayla Johnson pushed the 'Nooks forward with a 5-4 run by herself before the Falcons answered with a basket to end the third quarter, 53-38.

Alaska went cold from the field in the fourth quarter, shooting just 2-14, 0-5 from three to 7-14, and 0-3 from SPU. Five free throws from the 'Nooks and a Tolliver and Van Dyke layup were the scoring total for the final quarter of the 2022-23 year. Alaska would walk out with the loss, 69-47.

This loss wraps up the Nanooks' season.
