Six Unanswered Goals Powers Nanooks Past LIU for Weekend Sweep

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team moved to 18-10-2 on the season with an incredible 6-3 comeback victory over the LIU Sharks. After a second-period deficit, the Nanooks came storming back to tally six unanswered goals for their 6-3 win.

It did not take long for LIU to silence the 2,800-person crowd in the Carlson Center. Only 2:02 into the game, Noah Kane made it 1-0 Sharks. Valtteri Piironen was credited the lone assist. Jack Quinn tallied a second goal in the first for Long Island over 12 minutes later, making it a 2-0 deficit for Alaska after the opening 20 minutes. Alaska did not lack chances, going on a power-play opportunity that became a 5-on-3 look. Despite 11 shots-on-goal and three on the man-advantage, the 'Nooks could not tally one in the first.

4:03 into the second, while on the power play, LIU struck again. This time it was Riley Wallack making it a 3-0 deficit for Alaska. Four minutes later, the Nanooks finally struck while on the power play. After T.J. Lloyd and Garrett Pyke played the puck to Jonny Sorenson, the forward drifted to the slot and fired one into the back of the net, making it 3-1. Less than two minutes later Payton Matsui pulled Alaska within one. Arvils Bergmanis played the puck to Braden Birnie before finding Matsui in front of the net. He found the back of the net for the Nanooks second goal in two minutes. Three minutes later, again on the power play, the Nanooks found the equalizer. Harrison Israels found a loose puck and put it in the back of the net to make it 3-3 13:10 into the second. Sorenson tallied his second point with the primary assist; Brady Risk picked up the secondary.

Tying the game was just the beginning. Just less than two minutes later, 15:08 into the second, the Nanooks officially grabbed the lead as Kyle Gaffney tallied the game-winner after playing the puck from Matt Koethe and Lloyd. After four unanswered and taking a 4-3 lead into the third, the Nanooks played add-on. Brady Risk tallied the first 3:27 into the third. Sorenson tallied his third point of the night, picking up the lone-assist on Risk's tally. The final goal of the night, the sixth of the six unanswered, came from 195 feet away on LIU's empty net.

Connor Mylymok played a loose puck next to his netminder, Matt Radomsky, and put the puck down ice while falling. The shot never lost eyes for the net and made it a 6-3 final in the Carlson Center. Garrett Pyke was credited with the assist on the empty-net goal.

Radomsky ended the night with 30 saves and grabbed his 18th win of the season in net for Alaska.

The Nanooks now hit the road for the final time in the regular-season next week when they face Arizona State at Mullett Arena on Feb. 24-25.
