Strong Offense from Saint Martin's Downs the Nanooks on Senior Day

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team fell to the Saint Martin's Saints in their home regular-season finale. The Saints outshot the 'Nooks and used a 13-point advantage in the second half to grab an 83-61 win over Alaska. The loss dropped the Nanooks to 11-13, 6-10 GNAC.

Alaska outshot the Saints in the first, 46.4% to 45.4%, but two more made field goals and a total of seven made threes in the first gave Saint Martin's a halftime advantage of 38-29. Out of the break, SMU continued their strong shooting, posting seven threes and 16 made field goals, growing their lead and grabbing the win 83-61. Jordan Kanoe started his senior day with the first bucket, a layup only six seconds off the opening tip. SMU turned around and rallied seven-straight points off, making it 7-2 Saints. After a small run by Alaska to tie the game back at 7-7, the two teams traded buckets and leads. Alaska took an 11-10 lead on a Tyler Mrus jumper but their lead would not last long as only 14 seconds later, SMU connected from deep and took the lead back. Their lead reached nine but Tybenn Sturm connected from deep at the 3:18 mark, pulling the 'Nooks within two.

Two was as close as the 'Nooks came to end the first before Saint Martin's ran their lead back to nine at the halftime break.

Out of the break, SMU's lead grew to double-digits. A Paul Johnson layup pulled Alaska within eight nearly two minutes into the second, but the Saints found an answer to every small Alaska run. Jaycson Bereal, Jr. hit a mid-range jumper with just over 13 minutes to play to make it a nine point game but that was the last time the Nanooks were within single-digits. Unfortunately for the Nanooks, the Saints strong shooting put the game away in the final 10 minutes. SMU grabbed the 22-point victory, extending their winning-streak to nine.

Alaska was led by Tyler Mrus, who posted a dozen points on 5-5 shooting from the field. He knocked down both of his free throws and grabbed a rebound. Nick Hopkins joined him in double-digits with 11 points, going 3-8 from the floor and 5-7 from the line. He grabbed five boards and dished two assists.

The Nanooks hit the road and will end their regular-season on the road at Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific.
