Vikings Spoil Nanooks' Comeback with Overtime Victory

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team made a heroic comeback late in the third period, but ultimately fell to Augustana 3-2 in OT on Saturday night.

The first 40 minutes of play was skated to a scoreless 0-0 tie before both sides erupted for two goals in the third period. The Nanooks were held scoreless after a pair of power play opportunities in the first and second period. They also kept the Vikings off the board in the first and second on three penalty kills, including a 5-on-3 during the second period. In the third period, Augustana struck first as Colton Friesen made it 1-0 only 1:06 into the final regulation period. After 10 minutes of play, the Nanooks struck back, tying the game up at 1-1 on Chase Dafoe's first-career goal. The sophomore tallied his first goal in his 21st-career game, tying the game at 1-1 11:12 into the third. Just over two minutes later, Matt Koethe tallied his first goal of the season, giving the Nanooks the lead at 2-1.

Unfortunately five minutes later, the Vikings found the equalizer. With the empty-net, Augustana found the back of the net on Evan McIntyre's goal 18:04 into the third.

That goal took the two sides to overtime where in the 3-on-3 extra period, Shay Donovan netted the game-winner 53 seconds in. The 3-2 win sinks the Nanooks' winning-streak at three and puts them 9-6-1 on the season.

Alaska is back in action on Dec. 28-29 at the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. They open the 57th installment with Michigan Tech and will face either Ferris State or Michigan State on Dec. 29.
