Men's Basketball Searches for Sunshine at 2023 Big Island Holiday Classic

HILO, Hi. - The Nanooks men's basketball team heads to the Big Island Classic, hosted by Hawaii Hilo, on Dec. 17-18. They look to get back in the win column after splitting their GNAC-openers.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are back in action after a few weeks off. They last played on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 to open up their 2023-24 GNAC schedule. They traveled to Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings and split with the Falcons and Yellowjackets, grabbing a victory at SPU on Nov. 30, 82-64. They fell to MSUB on Dec. 2, 65-39. In the victory at SPU, the Nanooks were led by Abdullahi Mohamed who posted 17 points and five rebounds. Bryan Nguyen followed with a dozen opints and five rebounds of his own. TJ Doman and Mawich Kachjaani both added 10 points. In the loss at MSUB, Nick Hopkins led the way with 10 points on 5-10 shooting.

  • The Nanooks have a pair of athletes appearing in the individual NCAA DII rankings. Abdullahi Mohamed finds himself in four individual categories. He's currently 143rd in free throw attempts (45), 125th in free throws (35), 219th in rebounds per game (6.4) and 36th in offensive rebounds per game (3.14). 
  • Nick Hopkins joins Mohamed in offensive rebounds per game, coming in at 169th with 2.25 per game. 
  • Mohamed is second in the GNAC for offensive rebounds per game and is fifth in free-throw attempts. 
  • As a team, the Nanooks are second in the GNAC and 31st in the nation in rebound margin. They are +6.1 on the season in rebound margin.

Big Island Holiday Classic
This seaon's BIC features 10 games between nine participating teams from the NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA ranks. The event will fun Dec. 15-19. All-Tournament Passes are available for adults ($40), 65+ seniors ($20) and middle/high school students ($20). Single-game purchases can also be made. Adults ($10), 65+ seniors ($5) and middle/high school students ($5).

Looking Ahead
After the trip to the Big Island, the Nanooks will return home to open 2024 at home on Jan. 6, 2024 with Alaska Anchorage. They'll stay at home the following week as well as they welcome Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 11, 2024 and Central Washington on Jan. 13, 2024.
