Box Score Marquette, MI – Despite their efforts in their second game against the Northern Michigan Wildcats, the Nanooks hockey team could not walk out with a win, succumbing to the 'Cats with a final score of 3-1.
Although the Nanooks went shot-for-shot with NMU in the first period and eventually outshot the Wildcats 14-10, both teams left the first period scoreless. It was with 4:34 left on the clock that Nanook goalie Pierce Charleson was faced with a series of three shots, and he handled each with ease. After a penalty called on the 'Nooks with less than a minute left in the first, they would enter the second, battling to kill the previous period's fault.
In the first 50 seconds of the second period, NMU's Kevin Marx Noren tallied the first goal of the three for the Wildcats. This would start a cascade of power plays for the Nanooks, contributing to their ability to outshoot the 'Cats again 13-12. Despite outshooting NMU, the 'Nooks were unable to find their way past NMU goalie Charlie Glockner, who saved 31 shots on the night.
In the third period, the Nanooks fought to close a three-point gap after NMU's Connor Eddy netted the second of the night, followed by an empty net goal by Aiden Gallacher. Late in the third, Charleson left the net for an additional man-on-ice, leading to a goal by Nanook Harrison Israels, tallying his tenth on the season. Payton Matsui and Anton Rubtsov assisted the shot.
The Nanooks finished 0-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill. Charleson made 28 saves on the night while the Nanooks outshot the Wildcats by just one, 32-31.
The Nanooks hockey team is headed home to recoup and prepare for the second stint of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 1. in Anchorage, Alaska.
