Dubois Tallies a Pair of Goals but the Nanooks Fall to Denver

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks were swept by Denver on Sunday, Oct. 8. The 'Nooks fell 5-2 to Denver, falling to 0-2-0 on the season.

Night two started off just like night one, with an Alaska Nanooks goal. 6:47 into the opening period, Chase Dubois found the back of the net, taking a centering pass from Payton Matsui. Kyle Gaffney first played the puck to Matsui before the center played the puck from behind the DU net to the cutting right wing. Dubois took care of the rest, making it 1-0 Nanooks. Their lead would hold for much of the first but with 54.5 seconds remaining, Tristan Broz made it 1-1. The Denver goal tied it up heading into the first intermission.

Unfortunately, this started a string of five goals in a row for Denver. Zeev Buium grabbed the lead for the Pioneers 3:31 into the second period. Jack Devine, while on the power-play, made it 3-1 Pioneers under two minutes later. Devine found the net again six minutes later, again on the power-play, making it 4-1 Denver. The 4-1 lead would hold into the second intermission. 13:52 into the final stanza, while on the penalty kill, DU added their final goal of the night. Kieran Cebrian netted a short-handed breakaway goal for the Pioneers to extend their lead to 5-1.

Three and a half minutes later, 17:25 into the third, Dubois connected on his second goal. Braden Birnie entered the attacking zone and a lifted puck was played out of the air by Dubois. After grabbing it out of the air, he dropped it to himself and set himself up for a one-timer from the slot, beating DU goalie Matt Davis to make it 5-2. That'd finish as the final.

Alaska ended the night outshooting Denver 29-16.

They head to Michigan Tech next weekend for a matchup with the Huskies on Oct. 13-14 in Houghton, Mich.
