FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks swim team fell to the Azusa Pacific Cougars on the second night of the 2023-24 campaign. 

Alaska and APU competed in 11 events on day two of the two-day series. Event one was a 200-yard medley relay. APU grabbed the win with a time of 1:50.35. The top-finishing team for the Nanooks was made up of Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Dorka Dancsok, Adeline Berry and Lainey Lioi. They took second place with a time of 1:53.03. The other Nanooks relay team took fifth with a time of 2:03.98.

In the second event, the 1000-yard freestyle, the 'Nooks were led by Payton Wojciechowicz's third-place finish and time of 11:23.49. Tori Shoemaker followed in fifth with a time of 11:33.96 and Meah McCallum took sixth with a time of 12:04.50. Mesa Moran led the Nanooks in the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, finishing third with a time of 2:10.22. Kaidence Sampsel took fourth (2:11.68) and Kylee Carter took sixth (2:30.89). The Nanooks took fourth-fifth-sixth in the 50-yard freestyle as Fletcher-Stables led the way with a time of 25.86. Lainey Lioi took fifth (26.24) and Adeline Berry took sixth (27.49). 

The night's first win for Alaska came from Dorka Dancsok in the 400-yard IM. Dancsok grabbed first with a time of 4:32.94, winning by over six seconds. Naomi Burgan finished in fifth. Moran finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly to lead the 'Nooks with a time of 2:26.95. Berry followed in fifth. In the 100-yard freestyle, Lioi took fourth to lead Alaska with a time of 56.54. Shoemaker followed in fifth, and Sophia Ruppert took sixth, finishing within a second of Shoemaker. 

Charlotte Fletcher-Stables took second in the 200-yard backstroke, the eighth event of the evening. Shannon McCallum followed in fifth and Sampsel finished in sixth. Wojciechowicz finished in fourth, this time in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:40.07. Lori Houghton followed in fifth and Kylee Carter in sixth. The second to last event saw the Nanooks grab another individual win. Dancsok picked up a first-place finish again, this time in the 200-yard breaststroke. She won the event with a time of 2:26.91, winning by nearly a full two seconds. Burgan took fifth. In the final event of the night, the Nanooks relay teams went one-two as the team of Lainey Lioi, Dorka Dancsok, Charlotte Fletcher-Stables and Adeline Berry grabbed the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.66. The second-place Nanooks' team finished in 1:49.63.

The Nanooks swim team will be back in action at the Patty Center Pool on Friday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. for day one of a two-day series versus Cal State East Bay.
