FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks swim team fell to the Azusa Pacific Cougars on opening-night of their 2023-24 campaign. 

Alaska and APU competed in 11 events on day one of their two-day series. Event one was the 400-yard medley relay. APU grabbed the win with a time of 3:58.59. The top-finishing team for the Nanooks was made up of Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Dorka Dancsok, Adeline Berry and Naomi Burgan. They took second with a time of 4:05.05. The other Nanooks relay team took fourth with a time of 4:22.44. 

In the second event, the 1650-yard freestyle, the 'Nooks were led by Payton Wojciechowicz's third-place finish and time of 19:07.15. Meah McCallum followed in fifth with a time of 20:11.15 and Kylee Carter took sixth with a time of 21:50.88. Naomi Burgan led the Nanooks in the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, finishing third with a time of 2:05.96. Shannon McCallum took fifth (2:07.83) and Tori Shoemaker took sixth (2:09.32). The Nanooks took fourth-fifth-sixth in the 50-yard freestyle as Lainey Lioi led the way with a time of 25.39. Adeline Berry took fifth (27.39) and Sophia Ruppert took sixth (28.13). 

The first win of the night for Alaska came from Dorka Dancsok in the 200-yard IM. The newcomer grabbed first with a time of 2:06.60, winning by nearly a full seven seconds. Fletcher-Stables finished in fifth and Lori Houghton finished in sixth in her first race in the blue and gold. Adeline Berry finished third in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the 'Nooks with a time of 1:03.71. Mesa Moran followed in fifth and Kaidence Sampsel took sixth. In the 100-yard freestyle, Sophia Ruppert took fourth to lead Alaska with a time of 1:00.20. Shoemaker followed in fifth and Sampsel took sixth, all finishing within one second of each other. 

Charlotte Fletcher-Stables took second in the 100-yard backstroke, the eighth event of the evening. Lainey Lioi followed in fourth and Shannon McCallum finished in sixth. Wojciechowicz had another top-three finish, this time in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:36.14. Naomi Burgan followed in fourth and Moran took fifth. The second to last event saw the Nanooks grab another individual win. Dancsok picked up a first-place finish again, this time in the 100-yard breaststroke. She won the event with a time of 1:06.36, winning by over two seconds. Houghton took fifth and Carter rounded out the Nanook finishers with a sixth-place finish. In the final event of the night, the Nanooks relay teams went one-two as the team of Lainey Lili, Dorka Dancsok, Charlotte Fletcher-Stables and Naomi Burgan grabbed the win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.05. The second-place Nanooks' team finished in 3:56.93.
