ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to #20/18 St. Cloud State on Friday, Oct. 20. With the loss, Alaska is now 1-3-1 on the season.
It took the Huskies 5:32 to take the lead. Veeti Miettinen got the SCSU scoring started while on the power play, making it 1-0. After playing the puck from behind the Nanooks' net, Miettinen skated in near the face-off circle and snapped a wristshot past Pierce Charleson to grab the early lead. About five minutes later, Nick Portz made it 2-0 Huskies.Â
Unfortunately for Alaska, the deficit became 3-0 just before the first intermission. Adam Ingram played a backhand off of a rebound shot 19:38.4 into the first. The second period was scoreless as both sides fired off seven shots-on-goal. In the third, the Nanooks were outshot 17-3 but managed to get on the board. After a deflected puck was played in the corner, Braden Birnie found Dawson Bruneski between the center point and the slot. The defenseman fired a shot past the SCSU netminder cutting the Huskies lead to 3-1. This was Bruneski's first point and goal in the blue and gold.Â
This goal came 10:14 into the third. SCSU would respond just over three minutes later as Joe Molenaar made it 4-1, the eventual final score. The Nanooks ended the night 0/5 on the power play and went 4/5 on the kill, including four-straight kills after the first goal of the night.Â
Pierce Charleson stopped 30 of the 34 SOG. Braden Birnie and Matt Koethe earned the apples on Bruneski's goal.Â
These two teams meet again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. AKST.Â
